Upgrades to the Subway in NYC

At Oxford, we think New York City is the best place to live -- but sometimes it can be a challenge to get around. With five boroughs to explore, New York City is bigger than some may realize, and as real estate agents, getting around quickly is one of the things most important to us. Most real estate agents depend on the public transportation system that New York is known for -- the good and the bad.

While the New York subway system may be iconic, it can also have trouble with service. Some of the problems that our agents run into from time to time include long delays, trains being shut down for extended periods of time and long distances between stations. It is because of our day-to-day use of the public transit system in New York City that we were especially excited to see about the planned upgrades to the entire system.

One of the projects that it is currently underway is upgrading the signal systems for subways and buses for the city . It might seem like a small thing, but it is going to have a major impact on our lives. When the signal system works properly, it allows for trains to run smoothly and more efficiently, reducing delays and letting busy New Yorkers get to where they need to go.

The MTA also has plans to complete repair work at over 150 stations and when that is finished, we’re sure that we will see an improvement on how the public transportation system works in New York City.

650 new subway cars will be added to the fleet of subway cars which will make for a more enjoyable commute and means that there should be fewer breakdowns on the system. Additionally, the MTA is going to get 1,200 Communication Based Train Control (CBTC) subway cars, which lets trains run more closely together and with greater reliability, which in turn allows the subway system to run more efficiently and safely.

Remembering that buses play an important role in the lives of New Yorkers, the MTA is also going to get 2,800 new buses on the road along with a new payment system. In order to make sure that buses are running at their most efficient, the MTA is planning on redesigning all of the bus routes for the five boroughs and we’re excited to see what the new maps will look like.

New York City is incredibly vibrant and part of what makes it one of the best cities in the world is the ability to get from one end of it to another. A robust and comprehensive public transportation system is critical and we are delighted to see that the MTA is stepping up to make these much-needed improvements to New York City.
